Overview
The first question is whether doubling persists when one eye is closed. Double vision with both eyes open (binocular) points to misalignment of the eyes; double vision in one eye alone usually has an optical cause within that eye, such as cataract or astigmatism.
Sudden double vision — especially with headache, droopy lid, weakness or difficulty speaking — should be treated as urgent.
